Visit Rochester
Just about every town across Australia has a local hero or legendary story that sets them apart from every other township in the country. Rochester is no exception to this rule and their famous local goes by the name of Hubert Opperman. Hubert Opperman was a local push bike rider who developed his skill into a fully fledged racing career. He was so fast they nicknamed him The Bullet. He set many cycling records during his time and upon his retirement, he did something that really put Rochester on the map.
Sir Hubert began designing his own bicycles! That’s right, he took all his knowledge of cycling and set about designing a push bike that was superior to anything else on the market. The end result was the Malvern Star bicycle; something all Australian kids now grow up with! Rochester set up a museum in his honour and it is known by the name of ‘The Oppy Museum’.
Rochester is much more than just a cycling town though, it’s one of many dairy towns located in this region of Australia as well as fishing and irrigation. It’s famous for the Campaspe Siphon which is considering an engineering feat like no other and is used to direct water via the irrigation system through the many river beds in Rochester.
Why stop by Rochester during your next trip around Australia and take in everything it has to offer. It’s ideal for a one or two day stay and is perfect for families with kids of all ages.
